CONGRATS ON THE NEW ADDITION TO YOUR FAMILY!

Adding a new family member whether it be a baby or a puppy is always a joyous occasion. Having a new puppy on one hand is an experience a bit different than having a baby. For one there is fur, four legs and a completely different way to communicate.

I have designed this page just for you and your family. This page has everything you will need to know about your new fur-baby and everything having a fur-baby entails. I will go over everything from food and comfort to discipline and communication.

Please take time to read this  page as a guide anytime you have a question and feel free to contact me with any questions you have.

Cesar Millan's New Puppy Owner Tip

 Step 1: Bringing Puppy Home

This is always a fun day. The entire family caters to the small puppy coming to it's new home for the first time.

For the puppy this is a day of mixed emotions. Leaving the Mother and at times, Father and multiple brothers and sisters, they may never see again. To a new mother and father and new human brothers and sisters. Excitement and fear will rush your new puppy and may overload them into exhaustion. No need to worry its all natural.

New smells - Let your puppy smell it's new environment. If you have boundaries set up in your home of where the puppy is not allowed to go, let the puppy know with a firm "NO" and turn them into a new direction to smell. Continue that with every boundary you have set in your home.

Chewing - Along with the new smells will be the chewing. Your puppy will put EVERYTHING in its mouth to put into a category much like babies do.Either "Can I eat this?"  "Does this taste good?" "What is this texture?". Again with a firm "NO" communicate to your puppy what is edible and what is not. (Most things for puppies are not edible)

Introductions to the family and previous pet - Introducing your puppy to the human family is a complete 180 than introducing your puppy to the previous pet of the family. When introducing your puppy to the humans, your puppy will pick up on certain smells that human has and will identify that smell to that particular human.

For the previous pet - Animals communicate with smells, eye contact and most important ENERGY. This is a very very IMPORTANT communication that if not done right, can take some time to correct.

**DO NOT STICK ALL PETS INTO A CRATE. This creates tension and fear that can turn into anger and a fight.**

Go For A Walk - Take you new puppy out for a 30 minute walk. Let them smell their new environment. When they potty outside while on the walk, reward them with a treat or verbally with a high pitch "Good Potty". This will already start them on their Potty training and they will understand better.

If your previous pet is a dog take them both for a nice 30 minute walk. This is the best way to integrate your puppy to its new family along with the previous dog. The new sites and smells of the puppies new neighborhood will excite them and tire them out. Everyone in the family should join in the walk as a PACK. This will ease the tension between the dogs so they will get a feeling of comfort and unity. The dogs should walk everyday for 30 minutes or more TOGETHER to keep this unity between their PACK.

Step 2: Sleeping and Eating Quarters

If you have designated a particular area of your home for the puppy to sleep and eat, gently take the puppy to that area.  Have their bowls set up with water and food in each. Place puppy pads down for potty use and their bed for sleeping. Have their toys present in that area too. Keep the puppy there so they can get familiar to the smell and begin to rub their scent into the bed and chew the toys. This new puppy will mark that area with its scent. NOT URINATING as a marking territory act, but rubbing on the bed with it's fur. Your puppy may want to sleep for about 30 min after arriving to their new home. Let them sleep and admire them from afar.

Step 3: Getting Onto A Schedule

I am sure in your home you have a schedule for your family. Keep the schedule the same, but make minor changes for the puppy to get adjusted. Feeding times for 6 weeks to 25 weeks should be 3 times day. Up their eating by half a cup of dry food every 3-4 weeks. Do Not integrate wet food until 14 weeks of age. If you do not want to feed them wet food that is fine as well. I understand in some households someone may not be there to feed the puppy for a 2nd or 3rd time. This is the minor change you will need to make.

Example Feeding Schedule -

7 am feeding, 12 noon feeding, 4 pm feeding (Try not to feed your puppy late into the evening past 5:30 pm or you will be sorry with the bowel movements that will occur all night long)

Keep water on hand all day long and decrease the water intake after 7 pm to keep them from having to go potty all night. This will help with outside potty training in the future as your puppy moves from potty pads to going potty outside.

Puppies need to relieve themselves 2 hours everyday until they reach 6 months old. Then it will be every 3 - 4 hours as they have more control to hold it longer.

Step 4: Toys, Comfort and Food

As a new puppy parent, part of your job is to encourage healthy chewing behaviors and to help your puppy learn which items can and cannot be chewed. This Nylabone Puppy Starter Kit offers three different Nylabones designed to complement varying stages of your puppy's development. Included are: one Puppy Bone, a more flexible, pliable bone designed to assist in the development of teeth and jaws in puppies 2 months and over; one Healthy Edibles Bacon Bone, a natural flavored edible chew that's an ideal alternative to processed rawhide or animal parts. Contains no salt, sugar or plastic and it's 100% edible and digestible. Healthy Edibles should be offered from 3 months on; and, one Durable Pooch Pacifier in Chicken flavor. This chew is designed for puppies 4 months and older, whose jaws are getting stronger and their chewing more aggressive. Each of these bones is non-toxic, vet-approved and measures 4.75"L.

Puppy Teething Keys are specifically designed for teething puppies to encourage non-destructive chewing. Not recommended for powerful chewers or puppies with any adult teeth. These chews assist in the growth and development of teeth and jaws, while the irresistible Bacon flavor encourages non-destructive chewing habits.

Pedigree Healthy Start is designed for all types of puppies and their variety of feeding needs. This chicken-flavored, dry puppy food is easy to chew with smaller kibbles, so you know your puppy will be able to chew their food comfortably. Healthy Start outperforms the competition in dog enjoyment.

Your puppies new bed will become their haven. Now in some cases, although you have designated a pet bed and a certain area for your puppy to lay, your puppy may find more comfort in other ares such as your bed, the couch, under tables and so on. In that case don't discourage you puppy to not sleep there, just bring the pet bed to that area and eventually they will become more accustomed to THEIR bed.

Step 5: Training

Training should start at a young age. Even at a young age, puppies can start to learn manners. This needs patience and consistency.  Find a reputable dog trainer in your area and begin as soon as you bring the puppy in the home. The earlier you start and continue with training the better experience you will have once they reach adolescence.
